Märzmelodie

In 2007 rise | visual effects berlin created two mattepainting vfx shots for the X-Filme movie "Märzmelodie" by director Martin Walz. Both shots were filmed entirely on a greenscreen stage with a great deal of camera movement. One of the shots, a 180° dolly circle around the cast of the musical, was filmed - in addition to the film camera - by two mini dv spectator cameras to be able to analyze the dolly movement in 3D space during postproduction. Then the background was shot on a Berlin rooftop with the same dolly setup at a higher framerate. To put both plates together the background footage was retimed using the 3D camera motion data of the foreground. Using this technique visual effects supervisor Markus Degen and producer Sven Pannicke managed to eliminate the need for a motion control rig. The end of the movie reveals that Berlin is placed directly at the beach, accordingly the mattepainting had to blend a beach seamlessly into the cityscape.
